In a concerted effort to foster regional trade and business expansion, the Uganda National Traders Alliance (UNATA) has joined forces with the Fort Portal City Smart Traders Association (FOCSTA) to equip local traders with essential advocacy skills and knowledge. This strategic partnership seeks to bridge the gap between traders and policymakers, ultimately strengthening the regional economy.
On March 21st, 2025, the two organizations convened a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at Reinah Hotel in Fort Portal Tourism City, under the theme “Strengthening Regional Trade and Business Growth.” The event brought together key stakeholders, including traders, policymakers, and business leaders, to identify and address the pressing challenges faced by traders in the region.
Hon. Alex Ruhunda, the elected Member of Parliament for Fort Portal Municipality and a representative for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his remarks, Hon. Ruhunda underscored the significance of empowering local traders, citing their substantial contribution to the regional economy. He emphasized the need for traders to organize and advocate for their rights, urging them to take advantage of the training and advocacy programs offered by the UNATA and FOCSTA. Hon. Ruhunda also highlighted his commitment to supporting local economic development initiatives, citing his own experiences as a community organizer and researcher.
The partnership between the NTA and FOCSTA is built on the premise that empowered traders are better equipped to drive economic growth and development. By providing training in advocacy, business management, and entrepreneurship, the two organizations aim to enhance the competitiveness of local traders, ultimately contributing to the region’s economic prosperity.
BARO, an organization offering artisan courses, also attended the meeting, highlighting the importance of skills development and capacity building among local traders. By providing training in business management, marketing, and financial literacy, BARO aims to help individuals develop their entrepreneurial skills and compete in the regional market. BARO’s programs focus on promoting local economic development, preserving traditional skills, and supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs. Their presence at the meeting demonstrated their commitment to empowering local traders and contributing to the growth of the regional economy.
The stakeholders’ meeting served as a platform for traders to voice their concerns and challenges, ranging from limited access to finance and markets to inadequate infrastructure and regulatory frameworks. The meeting also provided an opportunity for policymakers and business leaders to engage with traders, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and exploring potential solutions.
As the regional economy continues to evolve, it is essential that local traders are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and support necessary to compete in the global market. The partnership between the NTA and FOCSTA is a significant step towards achieving this goal, demonstrating the power of collaboration in driving economic growth and development.
In conclusion, the empowerment of local traders is a critical component of regional economic growth and development. By providing traders with the necessary skills, knowledge, and support, the NTA and FOCSTA are helping to create a conducive business environment that fosters innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation. As the region continues to grow and develop, it is essential that local traders remain at the forefront of economic development, driving growth and prosperity for all.
